Summary

The Department of Ophthalmology at the Cullen Eye Institute, Baylor College of Medicine, is seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant I to join a translational research laboratory focused on microbial keratitis and the development of innovative therapeutic strategies to prevent vision loss caused by infectious corneal diseases.
The laboratory investigates host-pathogen interactions, mechanisms of corneal inflammation and tissue damage, and novel therapeutic approaches for bacterial, fungal, and other infectious keratitis. Research projects integrate molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, and preclinical disease models to identify and evaluate new treatment strategies that can be translated into clinical practice.


The Research Assistant I will support ongoing studies aimed at understanding disease mechanisms and evaluating emerging therapeutic interventions for microbial keratitis. The position offers an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in ophthalmic research, translational medicine, infectious diseases, and preparation for advanced training in biomedical sciences or medicine.

Job Duties

  • Assist with research projects focused on microbial keratitis, corneal inflammation, and therapeutic development (this is a general statement, the details are the tasks below)
  • Perform laboratory experiments using molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology, immunology, and biochemical techniques.
  • Maintain cell cultures, microbial cultures, laboratory reagents, and research records.
  • Assist with animal studies and sample collection in accordance with institutional protocols and regulatory requirements.
  • Collect, organize, analyze, and interpret experimental data.
  • Participate in laboratory meetings and presents research findings.
  • Assist with preparation of manuscripts, abstracts, grant applications, and regulatory documents.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field.
  • Two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in basic science or a related field.
  • Knowledge of ophthalmology and experience in ophthalmic or animal surgery skills are not necessary but a plus.
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques, including PCR, qPCR, cloning, Western blotting, and gene expression analysis.
  • Experience with cell culture, microbiology, immunological assays, or animal research.

Work Authorization Requirement:
