What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a R&D Laboratory Support Technologist to join our System Vibration and Acoustics Testing Laboratory team to strengthen our position as a recognized leader in the field of Structural Dynamics and help tackle some of the most complex issues facing our nation’s security! In this role you will support science and engineering research, development, and application activities in support of Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) missions.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Work with engineers to help realize ideas and designs and work together to accomplish goals.
  • Apply traditional Single Degree of Freedom and advanced Six Degree of Freedom & Multi-Input/Multi-Output vibration test techniques to an ever-changing assortment of projects including weapon systems, aerospace structures & payloads, and civil structures.
  • Handle units that may contain explosive, radiological, and/or other hazardous materials.
  • Independently set up and conduct high channel count, high-quality experiments.
  • Independently execute low to high hazard experiments and testing.
  • Ensure implementation of and adherence to work planning and control processes to assure safe, secure, and high-quality operations.
  • Lead the team in identification and implementation of technical and operational laboratory improvements associated with testing including progressing continuous process improvement initiatives to improve test quality and efficiency.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. Additionally, the applicant must be willing to work on nuclear deterrence systems.

Salary Range:

$62,400 - $120,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • High School graduate or equivalent and two years relevant experience
  • Experience implementing and executing work instructions and/or technical work documents
  • Experience with electrical instrumentation or hardware
  • Experience maintaining laboratory facilities and documentation
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DoE Q/Sigma clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • BS in STEM or equivalent experience in any of the following fields:
  • Vibration Testing
  • Structural Dynamics
  • Experimental Modal Analysis
  • Noise Vibration & Harshness (NVH)
  • Experience maintaining calibrated equipment
  • Experience with laboratory test setup, test execution, and test equipment such as vibration shakers, thermal conditioning chambers, data acquisition equipment, data analysis, and/or various instrumentation such as accelerometers
  • Experience with high consequence/rigor safety operations, such as working with units containing explosives, radioactive materials, and/or electrical energy
  • Electro-mechanical experience
  • Experience with basic vibration and acoustic environmental simulation techniques
  • Mechanical design experience
  • Ability to interpret, organize, and document experimental results
  • Commitment to operational safety, security and quality
  • Excellent personal interaction skills with management and technologists
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in a close team environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Current, active DOE L or Q clearance

About Our Team:

The Vibration/Acoustics Simulation Department, 01521, within the Engineering Sciences Center, 01500, specializes in replicating normal, hostile, and abnormal environments through tailored and controllable vibration/shock, acoustic, and thermal tests. In addition to vibration and acoustics capabilities, the department also has the ability to accurately take mass properties measurements for small and large-scale test articles. Test data is used to characterize the structural response of systems to a variety of environments. The work includes integration with environments engineering and advancement of diagnostics and experimental capabilities. These integrated capabilities support applied and fundamental laboratory research, model validation, experimental model development, and characterization of hardware behavior during operational environments in the development, qualification, and acceptance phases of a broad range of national security missions that include nuclear weapons deterrents, satellite assets, missile defense, conventional military technologies, infrastructure and energy security, and other applications.
