Following surgery, patients transfer to the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) where caregivers monitor their recovery from the immediate effects of surgery and anesthesia. Under the supervision of the Senior Technician Director, you will perform various tasks, ensuring patients receive frequent attention and observation as needed. This hands-on role requires a present, attentive and patient caregiver who is willing to learn new medical technologies and thrive in a fast-paced environment. On this team, you will gain a wide variety of skills you can use in advanced positions or other departments within the Cleveland Clinic system.
A caregiver in this position works evenings from 2:00PM – 10:30PM.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:

- Prepare units, patient rooms and patient beds for receiving patient admission, returning surgical patients, transfer or emergencies.
- Provide and document assigned care, such as bathing, changing/refreshing bed linens, dressing/undressing, feeding, etc.
- Take and document the patient's temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, weight and height.
- Perform treatment procedures, such as venous blood draws, enemas, application of ice and heat packs, non-sterile compresses, skin preps, setting up oxygen equipment, bed scale weights, setting up overhead trapeze and Buck’s traction.
- Assist with pre-operative and post-operative care, such as turning and positioning patients with proper body mechanics, applying/utilizing special equipment and ambulating the patient as directed in a safe, prescribed manner.
- Assist and accompany patients during admission, transfer and discharge.
- Perform hourly safety rounds, anticipate patient needs and respond to patient call lights promptly.
- Document patient care in the electronic medical record.
- Complete ongoing competency requirements, education programs and mandatory training to maintain certification and/or licensure.
- Prepare patients for meals, assists in feeding patients if necessary and distribute water and other nourishments according to patient needs in compliance with physician orders.
- Collect, properly label and transport specimens to proper area in timely manner.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certifications through American Heart Association (AHA) upon or within new hire period
- Basic computer knowledge and skills
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA)
- One year of recent critical care experience

Physical Requirements:
- Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking.
- Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
